Memorial Cleaning
When purchasing a memorial for your loved one, it’s natural to want it to remain beautiful for years to come. While our memorials should remain structurally sound for years, they will require some cleaning to keep them looking their best, just like anything left out in the elements would!
Hard-wearing granite memorials should clean up lovely just with a soft, damp cloth, particularly if it is a polished finished stone. Polished memorials should rarely require any professional attention when it comes to cleaning – just be very careful around the lettering. Honed or rustic finished granite memorials may occasionally need some professional assistance to bring the stone up as good as new

Porous stones such as York, Portland and Nabresina are simply stunning and the most classic-looking memorials, however due to their nature they tend to attract lichen and moss. Whilst this only helps them blend in with their natural surroundings, it can get to a point where it may become slightly unsightly. It is not recommended to attempt to clean these types of stones yourself. These memorials usually need to be machine cleaned which involves buffing a very fine layer off the surface to reveal the bright, clean stone underneath. The amount taken off is very minimal, but over time buff cleaning can reduce the depth of the lettering. Although not likely to be required for many years, once a memorial does get to this stage it would need to be refaced and a new inscription engraved.
If you would like to discuss a memorial cleaning, please reach out to us and we can assist you further. Please note, we will need to attend the grave site to evaluate what will be required prior to quoting.
